Joe Lieberman keeps his job

Senate Democrats voted yesterday to allow Sen. Joe Lieberman, who switched to a third party when he lost a fair fight in the Democratic primary in 2006, and who endorsed John McCain for President, to stay on as Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Lieberman is a wolf in sheep's clothing. This is a bribe. We'll regret it.

This has nothing to do with Lieberman but I'm not smart enough to figure out how to contact you otherwise. I love, love, love that you love Amy Hempel.

That is all. Well, and hello.

There are two issues at play here. First, if Al Franken and Jim Martin win, the Democrats need Obama for 60. Pissing him off now would be a silly move if those two guys win because it might make Lieberman vindictive. I'm personally hoping the Dems don't hit 60 or that Lieberman is a backstabber who kills their filibuster proof majority, but that's from my own personal leanings. The second issue is that this is more about Obama sending a message of reconciliation then actually wanting Lieberman around or caring. Obama basically told Reid that he wanted reconciliation and some sort of compromise. Obama is sending out an olive branch to McCain through Reid and Lieberman. Strange, but probably also a good move in the long run.

Wow, when did I become so cynical? I think part of it is that I think that party Orthodoxy is lame, but that goes against the whole system that's at work here.
