Hope is touching, and sad

"In 1992, Arkansas convict Ricky Ray Rector, who had brain damage from shooting himself in the head after killing a police officer, ate a final meal of steak, fried chicken, and cherry Kool-Aid, but famously said he wanted to save his pecan pie for later."

this doesn't speak of hope to me, it speaks of someone who was brain damaged and didn't understand what was about to happen to him. someone who doesn't understand that they can't have their pie later, doesn't seem like someone who should be killed by the state.
